Air Force recruiter stabbed in Harlem

HARLEM Authorities say 27-year-old staff sergeant Sara Charles was stabbed around 12:30 p.m. at 125th Street and Lenox Avenue while she was speaking with an applicant outside her office.

It appears that the stabber and the recruiter may have bumped into each other on the street, exchanged words and then Charles was stabbed. It does not appear that they knew each other, but police haven't been able to talk to Charles yet.

She was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in stable condition.

Police apprehended the 28-year-old suspect, identified as Lashawn Linton. The knife was reportedly recovered.

Charles has been in the Air Force for seven years, 2 1/2 of which have been spent as a recruiter. She is originally from New York and enlisted into the Air Force in Brooklyn. She is with the 313th recruiting squadron.

A 23-year-old Good Samaritan who was waiting for the bus and witnessed the stabbing also suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released.

Linton is charged with attempted murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
