3 NY counties offer free taxis for New Year's

In three New York counties, having that extra drink on New Year's Eve is not a problem - because a taxi will take you home for free. The Alert Cab program - available from 4 p.m. Wednesday to 2 a.m. Thursday, New Year's Day, in Rockland, Orange and Sullivan counties - will pay for a taxi to take residents home from bars, taverns and restaurants.

The service is being provided by Dana Distributors, the wholesaler of Anheuser-Busch products in the three counties.

Anyone using the service must turn in their car keys to the bartender, who gives them to the cab driver. The cab driver returns them to the passenger when they reach their home.

The cab service will only take residents home if they live in the county where they were picked up. It will not transport people attending house parties.
