Jogger attacked near Gracie Mansion

NEW YORK The attack happened on the Upper East Side Sunday, at the Carl Schurz Park promenade, around 1:45 p.m.

Police say 39-year-old Erika Dreifus, a professor at CUNY, was punched in the face for no apparent reason.

A mentally unstable homeless man is believed to be responsible for the attack.

Police say the woman was not robbed and that the incident appeared to be a random act of violence.

The attacker apparently ran into the woods behind the mayor's residence.

"She was on the ground," another jogger told the Daily News. "Her face was bloody."

Dreifus remains in the hospital in stable condition.
