LI police investigate rash of tire thefts

LONG ISLAND The thefts are reportedly happening on late-model vehicles parked in South Shore communities along the Nassau-Suffolk border.

Newsday reports that the thieves usually strike overnight, primarily in Massapequa, North Massapequa and Massapequa Park. Dozens of owners have woken up to find their cars propped up on concrete blocks.

"Look at NASCAR. They do it in eight seconds," Nassau Det. Sgt. Lucy Graziano told the newspaper.

In Suffolk County, police say the thieves most often hit places like Babylon and Lindenhurst.

Police are stepping up patrols in the affected areas.
