Man says he was beaten in 'hate' attack

NEW YORK The man was stabbed in the eye outside a grocery store in Queens, he says, because he's Sikh. He was stabbed after three men allegedly taunted him for his beard and pulled his hair.

Police in Jackson Heights have arrested two teenagers, charging them in the brutal attack, but are still searching for a third.

The victim, Jasmir Singh, is fighting to regain his eyesight.

Police say the incident took place at about 4:30 a.m. on the 37th Avenue sidewalk between 76th and 77th streets.

Singh says he and a friend encountered the suspects, who first demaned money.

Police say they are not investigating this as a bias crime, because no words were spoken to suggest a bias.

Jasmir tells Eyewitness News he believes he was singled out because of his hair and beard, traditionally worn by Sikhs.
