Cockfighting bust in the Bronx

January 24, 2009 8:11:30 AM PST
Dozens of roosters have been removed from a Bronx home where police say a group of people were watching a cockfight. Police say seven people who were at the Wallace Avenue home on Friday night were arrested on summonses and taken into federal custody. They are accused of being spectators at the cockfight.

Animal Care & Control of New York City says 43 roosters were removed and evaluated by veterinarians. If they're cockfighting roosters, they will likely be euthanized. A spokesman for the organization says roosters that have been used in fights can't be rehabilitated.

Police say the effort to shut down the cockfight was led by federal law enforcement authorities.
