"He took away my beautiful daughter. I don't know what to do without her," Rose Scherr said.
Rose and her husband Michael can't believe she's gone. Twenty-years young, a college graduate, and soon to be engaged, their daughter Melissa had a bright and promising future.
The impact of the crash sent Scherr's Nissan into a utility pole. Emergency crews rushed her to Huntington Hospital where she later died.
"It's like a nightmare. It's like a nightmare. I just want to think this is a dream and I want to wake up," Michael Scherr said.
Police arrested 44-year-old Douglass Davis of Centerport and charged him with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident.
Police say Davis checked the damage to his GMC pick-up and then drove away. But an alert Huntington Station Volunteer Firefighter noticed the damaged truck and followed it to a home in Greenlawn. Suffolk County police found the 44-year-old hiding behind a tree.
In court, Davis entered a plea of not guilty. He remained locked up on 250-thousand dollars cash bail. Prosecutors indicated the charges against him may soon be upgraded.
Michael and Rose Scherr spent their day making funeral arrangements for their beloved daughter, while Jennifer Scherr mourns the shattered dreams of her older sister.
"We talked about getting married and she was going to be my maid of honor. Now my own sister can't be in my wedding," she said.
