Libraries to accept food to settle late fees

January 27, 2009 7:12:05 AM PST
Passaic Valley libraries will accept canned foods from patrons who are late returning their books. The libraries in Woodland Park, Totowa and Little Falls will participate in the new "Food for Fines" program throughout February.

Alfred Baumann Library director Robert Lindsley says they're not looking to make money. They want to collect food.

The food will go to a pantry in Paterson that supplies emergency food aid to more than 30 food banks.

The libraries charge a dime a day, up to $5, for late books and CD's. They charge up to $10 for DVDs.

The libraries will also accept food donations.
