Suspect sought in attempted kidnapping

PERTH AMBOY The incident happened last Saturday around 11:00 a.m.

Investigators said an unknown man grabbed the 9-year-old girl as she was walking to her church classes near St. Mary's School on Mechanic Street.

The child was walking down a hallway to class when she was stopped by a man who told her classes were cancelled when they really weren't.

The man then grabbed the girl by the arm and escorted her across the street to the church and into a door that led to the basement of the church, police said.

The girl started to scream and the suspect ran off.

The alleged attacker was described as a light-skinned Hispanic man in his 30s with black eyes. He was wearing a green bubble jacket with the letters "JK'' on the side. He had an average build and was between 5-foot-8-inches and 5-foot-10-inches tall, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Perth Amboy Police Department at 732-442-4400.
