Ex-LI lawmaker admits taking bribe

January 29, 2009 12:59:20 PM PST
A former county legislator from Long Island has admitted taking an $18,000 bribe to influence the awarding of a contract to run a municipal golf course. Allan Binder entered the guilty plea Thursday in Suffolk County Court in Riverhead. As part of the plea deal, he will be sentenced to five years probation, and will have to surrender his law license, as well as licenses to sell stocks and insurance.

Binder, who now lives in Queens, was a Suffolk legislator from 1990 to 2005.

He admitted receiving payments from the president of a golf company in exchange for help in getting that company a 1997 contract to operate a municipal course in Northport.

Binder will be sentenced on April 24.
