Newark police kill armed suspect

February 15, 2009 1:35:44 PM PST
An armed man who apparently tried to rob some undercover Newark police officers was fatally shot by the officers after he aimed the weapon at them. Authorities say the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Friday, when 40-year-old Steven Vierra of Newark approached the officers in the area of Clinton Place and Weequahic Avenue and pulled out a handgun.

The officers ordered Vierra to drop the weapon, but instead he raised the gun and aimed it at one of the officers. Two officers then shot Vierra, who was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead at 10:03 p.m.

None of the officers were injured in the incident.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing the incident, which is standard policy for police-involved shootings.
