The officers ordered Vierra to drop the weapon, but instead he raised the gun and aimed it at one of the officers. Two officers then shot Vierra, who was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead at 10:03 p.m.
None of the officers were injured in the incident.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing the incident, which is standard policy for police-involved shootings.
