Arrest in string of UWS car fires

UPPER WEST SIDE Police say the man was caught near a car, at the intersection of West 83rd Street and Central Park West, just after 3 a.m. this morning.

Police arrested 54 year old Christopher Buxo. Police say when Buxo was arrested they also found a loaded hand gun, a knife, and a hammer on him. Buxo is suspected of setting four car fires. Police have also accused Buxo of setting a building fire.

The suspect was reportedly in possession of a flammable liquid at the time of the arrest, and it appeared he was about to set a car on fire.

He is now being questioned in connection with a string of four cars set on fire in the neighborhood in the past two weeks.

In the most recent fire, an SUV parked on Central Park West near West 105th Street was torched just after 5 a.m. yesterday morning.

The suspect has a lengthy arrest record Two of the three previous car fires in the neighborhood also occurred on Wednesdays and one was on a Thursday, all early in the morning.

The other fires involved:

  • a Ford Windstar parked at Central Park West and West 91st Street on Feb. 4;
  • a Volvo parked on West 87th Street near Broadway on Feb. 11; and
  • a Ford Escape at Central Park West and West 83rd Street on Feb 12.

    Rambling notes were left at the scenes of two of the fires.
