Who gunned down a Bronx landlord?

February 20, 2009 11:18:24 AM PST
A search for a killer is now underway in the Bronx. A 58-year-old landlord was fatally shot outside his apartment building on East 226th Street in the Williamsbridge section late Thursday night. Neighbors say the landlord was very meticulous -- he was constantly cleaning around the building. They say he was a man who took great pride in the neighborhood and now police are trying to figure out who killed him.

The landlord's family has asked that his identity not be released until the rest of the family is notified.

Family members talked to police early Friday morning to try to figure out if the camera was rolling when the landlord was murdered -- outside the apartment building he owned.

Investigators ducked under police tape searching for clues.

Detectives pointed out evidence and analyzed the scene. They're trying to answer three key questions: Who did this? Why? And where is this killer?

Neighbors hope police figure it out sooner than later.

Neighbor James Branble says, "..it's tough to hear somebody that you know got killed and you don't know what it's all about."

When officers got to 921 East 226th Street around 11:00 Thursday night, they found the 58-year-old man shot in the face.

Paramedics rushed him to Jacobi Hospital where he died.

Tenants tell police he was a great landlord and can't think of anyone who would want to hurt him. Neighbors say it doesn't add up.

"He's a good guy. He did what he needed to do get the job done. I never knew him to have any beef, " neighbor Deborah McCray said.

Neighbors tell Eyewitness News this is the second time in a handful of months that someone was murdered on this block.

In early December a 34-year-old man was shot in the torso same time of night and same stretch of sidewalk.

"Some young man got killed right here. The block is getting kind of rough," said neighbor James Branble.

Neighbor Elizabeth Nielsen says, "Old neighborhoods go down no matter where you are. No matter what borough, no matter what county -- it's the people."

Police so far have not made any arrests.
