Police involved shooting in Newark

NEWARK, N.J. According to very preliminary accounts, shortly after 9:30 Saturday night a Newark police officer observed a man with a firearm.

The officer attempted to subdue the suspect, who led the officer on a foot pursuit.

At some point during the pursuit, police said the suspect pointed the firearm at the officer.

The officer fired an undetermined number of rounds from his service weapon, striking the suspect in the leg.

The suspect was apprehended without further incident at Howell Place. He was transported to UMDNJ in stable condition.

Police said investigators recovered the suspect's firearm at the scene and he would be charged.
