Police said the girl was sitting at her computer inside her family's apartment when she was hit.

Investigators said a man barged into the apartment looking for someone who was not there. He apparently became so angry that he pulled out a gun and started shooting.

The mother tried to shelter her six children, but she could not get to her 11-year-old daughter in time.

She was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her chest.

The girl underwent surgery late Wednesday night. Doctors said the bullet went through her, barely missing her heart. She was listed in critical but stable condition. She was expected to make a full recovery.

The mother has asked police for protection until the shooter is caught. Police said they know who they are looking to find.
