Man charged in gas station slaying

November 22, 2010 9:47:40 AM PST
A Long Island man has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of a gas station worker. The Nassau County district attorney's office says Jose Luis Turcios Banegas of Hicksville was arraigned Friday in First District Court in Hempstead. He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Banegas was ordered held without bail and told to return to court on Tuesday.

The victim, Dharam Paul, of Valley Stream, was found fatally stabbed multiple times on Feb. 17. A customer discovered him on the floor of the Hicksville service station store.

Banegas was represented by a public defender; the district attorney's office did not have the lawyer's name on record.
