February 28, 2009 6:56:20 PM PST
The Department of Defense says a soldier from New Jersey has died in Iraq. Twenty-six-year-old Spc. Brian M. Connelly of Union Beach died Thursday in Adhamiya, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was struck by an explosive device. The DoD announced his death in a statement issued Saturday.

He was assigned to the 40th Engineer Battalion, Task Force 1-6, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division based in Germany. He had joined the Army in 2007.

Connelly had married his wife, Kara, last September. While speaking with her via webcam just four hours before he was killed, he had told her that his tour in Iraq had been shortened by three months and that he would be heading back to Germany in May.

"He was just awesome," Kara Connelly said Saturday night. "He was good hearted. He was funny. He was everything."

Connelly is also survived by his mother, stepfather and younger brother.
