Boy taken by carjacker in running car

March 4, 2009 12:16:51 PM PST
A boy was taken for a frightening block-long ride by a carjacker who noticed his mother's vehicle left running outside an East Orange school and jumped in the drivers' seat. The nine-year-old victim was left alone in a car when his mother parked at the Mildred Barry Garvin School at around 8:30 a.m. this morning.

The mother left the car running while she took her other child into the school.

The carjacker jumped into the vehicle, and drove a block before realizing the nine-year-old was sitting in the back seat.

He pulled over, gave the key to the kid, grabbed a purse left in the car by the child's mother, and fled on foot.

The unharmed child walked back to the school.

East Orange police state drivers should not leave their cars running in the cold.
