Woman jailed after deadly collision

EAST ROCKAWAY Anyone who saw what happened here on Atlantic Avenue in East Rockaway -- couldn't believe just how serious this was.

Thirty-five-year-old Timothy Motherway was just turning into his driveway, when his car was decimated.

"It look like how a drunk driver can do somebody," victim's neighbor Anthony Sorrentino said.

Patricia Bregel, 33, appeared disoriented immediately after the crash. She was the one driving the other vehicle which struck by Motherway's car -- and she is now charged with vehicular manslaughter and DWI.

For one neighbor, Motherway's death is all the more shocking, because he says... Motherway appeared conscious after the crash.

"I saw him..his arms were moving and he was speaking to the guys," said William Reuben, victim's neighbor.

But he died a short time later.

Today, debris still lines the section of sidewalk in East Rockaway, and residents tell Eyewitness News it is by far, not the first time such an accident has happened.

In fact, about 2 years ago, over here, only about 20 yards from the accident scene, another person was killed from a car crash. and that's why they now have a speed limit sign.

Those who heard the crash say Bregel must have been speeding, for Laura Baden, a member of Students Against Drunk Driving -- the crash hits home. She lost her 19-year-old friend this way.

"I know how all his friends and family must feel cause...that's something that really hurts," said Baden.

As friends did their best to pay their respects to Motherway, no one answered the door at Bregel's home in Lynbrook -- just a few blocks away.
