Police say a van driver is dead after his vehicle careened off Route 21 and into the Passaic River in New Jersey. It happened near Exit 6 in Belleville, New Jersey-- just before 6:00 p.m. The white van was submerged in the water underneath a small bridge.

Eyewitness News is told the driver and van were extricated from the water, but the driver was pronounced dead on the scene.

There is no word on what caused the van to go off the highway.

Route 21 was temporarily closed northbound from Exit 4 in Newark, to at least exit 7, in Belleville.
