MONTAUK --A flight instructor and student pilot have escaped unharmed from a fiery single-engine plane crash at Montauk Airport on Long Island. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters said Sunday that the Cirrus SR22 was taking off the day before when its right wing clipped the ground. The small plane became airborne, crashed into nearby trees and burst into flames.
Peters says the aircraft was destroyed.
Earlier in the day, the pair had flown from Cape Cod to Montauk.
