Shots fired as police chase bank robbers

FRANKLIN TWP., N.J. The robbery happened at at the Bank of America on Route 27 at Veronica Avenue in Franklin Township just before 6:00 p.m.

A patrol car driven by an officer responding to the robbery crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Franklin Boulevard and Fuller Street. No serious injuries were reported.

Police pursued the suspects through Franklin Township, North Brunswick and New Brunswick.

The pursuit came to an end when the suspects' vehicle crashed into a security gate in the rear of St. Peter's Hospital on Delafield Street.

According to police, the suspects then got out of the vehicle and at least one of them started shooting at police.

Several New Brunswick police officers returned fire, and then pursued the suspects on foot to Guilden Street where they were arrested.

Three of the suspects suffered gunshot wounds, police said. They were taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. The injuries were not life-threatening.

No officers were hurt.

Investigators recovered several weapons at the scene.

Charges were pending against the suspects.
