EAST ROCKAWAY The suspect reportedly surrendered to police just before 7 a.m. this morning, as family members rushed to the scene.

The hostages were all uninjured.

Police say the standoff began as a domestic dispute between the suspect and his wife at their Rhame Avenue home sometime around 12:30 a.m. this morning.

The woman ran outside, and a neighbor attempted to come to her aid.

According to reports, but the suspect, who was bloodied from the dispute, pulled the wife back inside the house.

The neighbor then called police, but the man refused to leave the house.

Eyewitness News is told he refused to let his wife, another woman and six children – ages two months to 15 years -- leave the house.

Police tried to call the house but he repeatedly hung up on them.

At one point, police say they got him to the front door and sprayed him with mace, but he slammed the door on them and went back inside.

It was not clear if the suspect was armed, although he motioned to police that he had weapons.
