"We had reports of people trapped. We pulled out five people," Irvington Deputy Fire Chief Brian Muehe said.
Fire officials say the five residents, including one girl, were rescued and rushed to Newark hospitals.
Three were at University Hospital in Newark and two others were at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark.
Eyewitness News is told more than 150 firefighters battled the blaze for hours, continuing to fight the hot spots as the sun rose.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
