Gay couple attacked after concert

NEWARK They say beaten by a gang of young people, who were yelling anti-gay slurs.

The question is why aren't police investigating this as a hate crime?

Daniel Caldwell's jaw's wired shut , broken in two places and chin bone is shattered, and teeth kicked into his gums.

Caldwell and his partner Joshua Kehoe say they were attacked at Commerce and Broad streets leaving the Britney Spears concert at the Prudential Center Saturday night. The couple claims a group of teenage girls and boys chased them screaming gay slurs.

Caldwell wound up in the street where he was kicked in the face repeatedly. The Newark police say they suspect the same group in two separate robberies and are investigating why the couple was attacked.

The gay rights group Garden State Equality believes because slurs were used during the violence, the attack should be labeled a bias crime.
