Judge releases letters from Madoff victims

March 20, 2009 2:54:12 PM PDT
The government has released dozens of emotional letters from victims of Bernard Madoff pleading with a judge to punish him harshly for his massive fraud. The letters were written to U.S. District Judge Denny Chin before he accepted a guilty plea from the disgraced money manager last week.

Madoff pleaded guilty to securities fraud and other charges and admitted defrauding thousands of investors of billions of dollars.

Chin sent him to prison immediately.

Investors like Richard Shapiro of Hidden Hills, Calif., told Chin that he was wiped out financially by Madoff's crimes.

He said it sent him into a deep depression and caused him to lose 30 pounds because he was so upset he could not swallow food.
