Immigrants fearful English classes could get cut

March 22, 2009 7:50:47 AM PDT
Immigrant communities are concerned about losing an important lifeline in this economic downturn. They're concerned that cutbacks to state and city budgets will reduce funding for adult literacy classes. Gov. David Paterson's proposed budget cuts funding for some programs that have English education components. And Mayor Michael Bloomberg's proposed city budget doesn't include some funding that supports teaching English.

But immigrants and their supporters are hopeful that the money will get restored once the state and city budgets are finalized.
