NEW JERSEY
The Star-Ledger of Newark reports that a multiyear crusade by
Human Services Police Officer Lt. Eduardo Ojeda uncovered that the
woman is 74-year-old Elba Leonor Diaz Soccarras, a Colombian
immigrant who struggled for years as a single mother supporting her
daughter with factory work.
Tips from the public and aid from the Colombian consulate helped
establish that Soccarras immigrated to the U.S. legally in 1969,
making her eligible for a transfer to a nursing home.
The non-verbal Alzheimer's patient has been living at the
Garrett Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital in Hunterdon County for
years.
