Other mom in baby mix-up speaks out

BROWNSVILLE

"We were very excited because we thought that was my baby," Shaquana Brown said. "I was happy. I was holding her. Her father was holding her. I was breastfeeding her."

On January 31, Shaquana gave birth to Kamira. She was born almost three months premature, so doctors rushed her out of the delivery room before Shaquana could even see her.

Three hours later, another mother at Brookdale, Shatiesha Brown, gave birth to a baby girl named Aniya, who was one month early.

While Shatiesha was receiving treatment for her high blood pressure, a nurse brought her baby to Shaquana's hospital room.

Shaquana and Shatiesha may have almost the same name, but the hospital ID band has a number on it to prevent this kind of mistake.

Shaquana says she read her ID number out loud to the nurse twice and still, received the wrong baby.

The hospital's mistake was discovered when members of both brown families met at the nursery window.

"My father and her family were at the window and they said that's our baby and we said that's our baby," Shaquana explained.

Shaquana says after nurses told her the baby she had been bonding with wasn't her baby, it took another half-hour to finally tell her where her baby was.

Little Kamira had been without her mother in the NICU all day because Shaquana had been busy with someone else's child.

A spokesman from Brookdale Hospital told Eyewitness News that the nurse responsible for the mix-up has been fired.

Both Brown families plan to sue the hospital.
