Amtrak train hits car on tracks

NORTH BRUNSWICK Police say 23-year-old Joel Mangroo of New Brunswick was negotiating a sharp bend in nearby North Brunswick when he lost control of his vehicle just before 10 a.m. Thursday.

The car hit a chain link fence and went down an embankment before landing on railroad tracks as an Amtrak train approached.

Mangroo escaped as Northeast Regional train #172 - headed from Washington to Boston - pushed the car about 200 feet.

Neither Mangroo nor the 278 passengers and crew on the train was injured. The passengers were transferred to other Amtrak trains.

Trains on the Northeast Corridor were delayed in each direction around the area due to the investigation. They were back on regular schedules by early Thursday afternoon.
