Report: At least 933 CT teaching jobs may be cut

HARTFORD, Conn. Superintendents were asked in a new survey how many teaching positions they have recommended for elimination in the budgets they present to their local school boards.

The proposed job cuts affect most aspects of the local educational systems, according to the Connecticut Association of Public School Superintendents. The reductions are being driven by the bad economy, rising personnel costs and level funding of state aid.

The association says the number may grow once the superintendents' proposed budgets go through the local budget approval processes.

There are about 50,000 certified teachers in Connecticut schools.
