New cell towers put near SI school

April 2, 2009 7:12:05 AM PDT
Some parents are expressing alarm after learning that nearby cell towers may be sending low-level radiation into classrooms at a Staten Island school. Our Lady Star of the Sea has been declared safe. But as a precaution, Monsignor Jeff Conway has ordered metal window screens.

And he plans to ask a strip mall to turn its antennas away from the school.

There also are cell towers on top of the school gymnasium, but they've been declared harmless.

Studies indicate radiation detected in the school came from the mall. The levels were deemed safe under federal standards. The mall's owner said those antennas are legal and have permits.

Assemblyman Lou Tobacco has asked the city to investigate.
