Freon leak sickens 11 at LI store

Police say a Freon gas leak at a Long Island supermarket has sent 11 people to a hospital with dizziness and sore throats. The Waldbaum's in Garden City Park was evacuated and remains closed after the incident shortly around 2 p.m. Monday.

Nassau County police say two of the people taken for medical evaluation were working on a refrigeration system. Freon is used as a coolant.

Waldbaum's is part of the Montvale, N.J.-based Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. Spokeswoman Lauren La Bruno says customers' and workers' safety is the company's greatest priority.

Freon is a colorless liquid that evaporates when exposed to air.

Breathing large amounts of it can cause dizziness, a loss of coordination and an irregular heartbeat.
