Group matches girls with prom dresses

NEW YORK Now, a nationwide organization is bringing those groups together- making it easier to donate and receive the dresses. It's the kind of delivery that can make a girl's face light up.

The dresses come from stores like Saks and J.C. Penny. Other dresses have been donated by young women who've already had their proms.

Now, a group of seniors at New Dorp High School on Staten Island will get to wear them at their prom.

Tierra Eddy says she'd already started dress shopping, but found the experience discouraging, as many of the prices were too high for her budget.

But not these dresses. They're for free, and within seconds the girls get the chance to find and wear their dream dress.

,p> "I like the way it fits," says Melissa Clark.

The halls of New Dorp High never looked so good thanks to http://www.donatemydress.org, the national network that collects and distributes the dresses to the girls.

A survey by Hearst Publishing shows teens spend an average of $236 on a prom dress. So getting a dress for free can make a huge difference in a young girl's life.

And that's not all.

"It definitely teaches them to give back," student activity coordinator Lisa Murphy said.

And for teens who need a dress, Prom Project is holding a dress drive event on April 25 from 12-4pm in the NAC Ballroom of City College in New York.
