Teen dies during park boxing match

JERSEY CITY Authorities say two 14-year-old boys were engaging in what appeared to be an unsupervised match when one of the teens was hit in the chest, collapsed and complained he couldn't breathe.

Both boys were wearing boxing gloves and were surrounded by a crowd inside the park, located at Terrace Avenue and Thorne Street.

An autopsy showed Ian Artola, of Jersey City, may have died from pre-existing heart condition, but authorities said Thursday that a final determination may not be made for several weeks.

Hudson Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said Artola and the other 14-year-old boy were boxing when Artola collapsed. Several other teens who were watching the match then tried to help Artola and called for medical help, but Artola could not be revived and was pronounced dead a short time later.
