Hit-and-run driver kills ex-star athlete

HACKENSACK Police say 23-year-old Jordan Pettway was hit while walking on the exit ramp Exit 64B, at Polifly Road, just before 2 a.m. Friday.

The longtime Englewood resident sustained serious head and neck injuries.

Officials say he was revived at the scene and rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A dark-colored two-door vehicle, possibly a green Honda Civic, fled the scene. The vehicle reportedly had heavy front end damage and was leaking fluid.

Several witnesses, including one who called 911, were being interviewed by New Jersey State Police detectives.

Detectives were trying to determine why Pettway was walking on the ramp. His car was not found nearby.

The exit ramp was closed for the morning commute for the investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the New Jersey State Police Totowa Barracks at (973) 237-4088.

Pettway was a track and field star when he attended Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood.

He was a longtime member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Hackensack.
