NYPD: Man killed after threatening cops, family

April 13, 2009 7:07:16 AM PDT
Police say officers shot and killed a knife-wielding Bronx man who threatened to kill his wife and three children and stabbed at officers, protected by their bulletproof vests. Mauricio Jacques' family was rescued during the standoff around 10 a.m. Sunday.

New York Police Department chief spokesman Paul Browne says the 35-year-old Jacques told officers he would kill his family and swung a knife at an officer who pulled Jacques' wife free from him.

Browne says police negotiators tried to persuade Jacques to surrender, and Jacques agreed but then lunged at two officers with a 10-inch knife.

Browne says officers fired after trying unsuccessfully to subdue Jacques with a stun gun and rubber pellets.
