Man blames dog's death on drying cage

POINT LOOKOUT, N.Y. Thomas Bruckner, of Point Lookout, Long Island, lost his pug-beagle mix last fall. A veterinarian says Bailey died of heatstroke, but says it's hard to verify how she became ill.

Experts say small, short-haired dogs or those with short snouts should be kept out of drying cages, or should be closely monitored.

Bruckner is promoting his mission online and supports proposed legislation. State Sen. Carl Kruger of Brooklyn wants to ban drying cages, require groomer exams, and license grooming parlors.

The National Dog Groomers Association of America says it is not against regulation. But it does oppose banning the cages.
