Two bodies found in Bensonhurst

BENSONHURST The scene was at 8020 Bay Parkway in Bensonhurst.

Police were called to an apartment shortly after 5 p.m.

Inside, police found the bodies of 71-year-old William Romano and 36-year-old Elviza Aronova. Residents say Romano used to be the Bay Parkway building's landlord, and Aronova was his girlfriend.

Police say no weapons were found with the bodies.

Residents say Romano was a good landlord and got along well with people there.

Romano was apparently found in the bathtub, and Aronova half naked in the bedroom. There were signs she may have been sexually assaulted.

Investigators said the apartment was ransacked. Police say Romano was also the former owner, but had fallen on hard times. Police say he was heavily in debt, owing hundreds of thousands of dollars. The apartment's electricity had been turned off.

Romano was due in court for an incident in January in which Aronova called police, saying Romano was roughing her up. He was arrested for possession of unlicensed shotguns. Aranova was also charged with possession of a crack pipe.

The Medical Examiner will determine the causes of death.
