The fire that followed the explosion spread to two homes next door. A third home was damaged by debris.
Investigators believe a body found in the rubble is a 40-year-old woman who lived in the home that exploded. She normally comes home from work in the afternoon, then picks up her two children at school, investigators said. The two children are safe.
At least six people suffered injuries, officials said, including four firefighters and a Con Ed worker. An 80-year-old woman was also hurt..
Officials said none of the six suffered life-threatening injuries.
The explosion happened when a Con Ed worker, responding to a report of a gas leak, opened a manhole. An investigation was underway.
The entire block was evacuated as more than 100 firefighters worked to put out the flames. It remained evacuated Friday night.
