Faulty elevator door blamed in death

BRONX The body of 67-year-old Sheldon Scott was discovered Thursday night inside an elevator shaft of his 10-story apartment building in the Bronx where he lived with his wife.

On Friday, city inspectors discovered that a mechanism that prevents riders from pulling open an outer door until the elevator car arrives had failed.

Once Scott opened the door, he ended up falling about 15 feet.

The victim's wife reported him missing Thursday afternoon.

Police say he was legally blind.
