Food stamp controversy at Costco

May 3, 2009 7:23:49 PM PDT
Outrage is growing among many residents in East Harlem over Costco's controversial policy not to accept food stamps. Costco is building a megastore on East 116th Street and FDR Drive.

Community leaders and residents are calling on the company to change its policy.

Thirty-two-thousand residents in East Harlem use food stamps.

Costco is accepting food stamps at its store in Puerto Rico.

The company says it's using that as a test to see if it will adopt the policy nationwide.

The Manhattan store will open this fall.
