Paterson's public support continues to fall

NEW YORK That's a 7-point drop since March.

Worse for the Democrat, the Marist College poll shows just 22 percent of voters in his party think he is doing a good or excellent job, and he isn't getting help from Republicans or independent voters.

The poll is the second to show that most New Yorkers would prefer Eliot Spitzer, the governor who resigned in disgrace in 2008 after being named in a prostitution investigation.

The poll shows 51 percent of New Yorkers prefer Spitzer to Paterson.

The poll questioned 1,029 registered voters Wednesday and Thursday. It has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
