Backyard cow slaughter causes outrage

May 5, 2009 3:50:42 PM PDT
There is outrage in Rockland County over the killing of a cow.Students and teachers at a yeshiva slaughtered the animal Monday night in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

It was around dinner time when Jody Wechsler saw a form of food preparation she would have never imagined. A calf was being slaughtered in the backyard right next to hers.

"It was very upsetting," she said.

The incident occurred on the grounds of a yeshiva run by the Bobover Sect. The converted house on Route 306 operates as a preschool. Police who responded to the scene were told the cow was slaughtered by a rabbi training to be a kosher butcher. A lawyer for the group says an internal investigation is underway, while a teacher at the school assured Eyewitness News that the children did not witness anything.

Police say no criminal charges will be filed, though the matter has been referred to the Rockland health department and Ramapo zoning commission. Meantime, there is no shortage of outrage in the neighborhood, which has fought the school on zoning issues in the past.
