Deadly fire in Riverhead

RIVERHEAD, Long Island There's nothing left of the place a mother and her daughter called home, as investigators try to figure out what caused the fire.

Neighbors are trying to cope with the deaths of their friends

The fire broke out after 4 a.m. on Thursday.

Both woman who lived there died in the fire, causing pain for the victims son who's trying to make sense of it all.

Eyewitness News has learned both woman had medical issues, and relied a home healthcare worker five days a week.

Stacy Smith says she had just picked up their breakfast. "I had just stopped and got her milk and butter roll," she said.

While investigators try to pinpoint the cause, neighbors worry it could've been a cigarette, since one of the occupants smoked.
