Boy rescued after sailboat capsizes

BAYPORT, N.Y. Police say Mathias Campbell was bounced from his 8-foot dinghy before noon on Sunday when powerful winds capsized the craft. As the waves and wind pulled him away from the shore and his boat, his lifejacket came loose.

The Bayport boy was floating about 200 feet from the craft when police officers pulled him from the 52-degree water.

Luckily, Suffolk County police boats and a helicopter had been in the area on an unrelated 911 call and were able to respond promptly. He was in the water about 15 minutes.

Campbell was reunited with his parents, and the sailboat towed to shore.

He was not taken to the hospital.
