Stamford police face 23 layoffs

STAMFORD Union president Sgt. Joseph Kennedy says talks broke down with the city Thursday evening, the deadline for reaching concession agreements. He says the mayor's office informed the union that pink slips will be issued.

The city's police and fire unions have been renegotiating contracts since last month, when the Board of Finance cut funding for salary increases to mitigate a tax increase. An agreement has been reached with the firefighters and most other unions.

The union says the 286-member department is down 29 members and cannot afford further cuts.

Board of Finance Chairman Michael Pollard says he's hopeful the mayor's office can still reach a compromise with the union.
