NYC gets new health commissioner

NEW YORK Dr. Thomas Farley is set to succeed Dr. Thomas Frieden, who will head the Centers for Disease Control.

Farley comes to New York from the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans.

He inherits a health department that is contending with swine flu outbreaks throughout the city. A number of schools are closed, and New York City just saw its first swine flu death on Sunday.

Bloomberg is making the appointment official Monday.

Farley takes over some time next month.
