FDNY wife convicted of murder

May 21, 2009 12:32:08 PM PDT
A jury in Staten Island Supreme Court on Thursday convicted Janet Redmond Mercereau, a New York City public school teacher, of the top charge of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of her husband in 20007. FDNY Fire Marshal Douglas Mercereau, 38, was killed while he slept in a bedroom in their Tarring Street residence.

"Following a careful and deliberative investigation, we excluded the possibility that anyone but Janet Redmond Mercereau could have killed her husband Doug," District Attorney Daniel Donovan said. "His murder was a cold and calculated execution. Janet Redmond Mercereau planned Doug's murder, then coldly executing him as he slept by multiple gunshots to his head, using his own service weapon. She then attempted to cover-up her heinous deed, laundering her clothes and placing the gun through a dishwasher. All this while their young daughters slept just feet away in their bedroom."

Janet Redmond Mercereau faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison when she is sentenced on June 25, 2009.
