Suspect tries East River to escape

NEW YORK Police say the suspect was rescued from the river.

According to witnesses, several police officers were in pursuit of the suspect, when he jumped into the water.

It all started with a home invasion robbery at 10 Catherine Slip at 5:40 Friday evening.

When investigators arrived on the scene, they were told a man with a gun on the fourth floor of the building.

Officers then heard shots fired, and headed to the fourth floor.

A couple told the police that three men pushed their way into their apartment and robbed the place.

As the three suspects fled, an altercation followed with three other men in the hallway. A gun went off during that confrontation. The bullet hit the door of another apartment.

After getting a description of the suspects, officers spotted the three running near South Street. The suspects split up and one of them jumped into the East River.

After police fished him out of the water, the suspect was taken to Bellevue for treatment of exposure.

An anonymous call directed police to a garbage can at 26 Madison Street where a 25-caliber handgun was recovered. The investigation is ongoing. Charges were pending.
